Water buffaloes in Charleston?

February 9, 2010

One of the newer features of the beautiful Middleton Place plantation outside Charleston is the addition of a couple of water buffalo to the stable area. While the historical provenance is there — antebellum Middleton did employ a few of these Asian imports to work the rice fields — most of all they’re just a lot of fun.

The two boys — named Adem (Earth) and Berk (Solid) — hang out in a little fenced-in muddy area in back of the stables. They are a little feistier than typical livestock. They like attention, but they’re a little on the aggressive side.
